The Upper Control Limit (UCL) is the statistically derived threshold on an SPC control chart above which a point is unlikely to occur if only common‑cause variation is present. Unlike a customer or regulatory specification (USL), a UCL is not a pass/fail requirement for product; it is a process health indicator computed from the process’s own baseline variation. A point beyond the UCL is a signal to investigate special causes, verify measurement validity, and restore the system to a state of control before quality degrades or nonconformances accumulate.   • Using overall σ for limits. Base UCLs on within‑subgroup variation; using long‑term σ numbs sensitivity.
  • Mixing specs and controls. Don’t print USL on control charts unless clearly distinguished; keep decisions separate.
